Send and review assignments
Send a candidate a unique link to an assignment, and read their answers back in the Assignments tab once they submit.
What it is
Sending an assignment mints a candidate their own unique link and messages it to them; they sign in, answer the questions once, and you read their answers back on their candidate profile. One candidate or many at once follow the same flow.
Send an assignment
Open Send assignment from a candidate's Assignments tab, or select several candidates on the Responses table and choose Send assignment from the ··· bulk-actions menu (see Bulk actions on candidates). In the dialog:
- Choose assignment form - pick which of the form's assignments to send.
- Message - a rich-text email, pre-filled from the form's Assignment reply template, with
an
{assignment_link}placeholder that's replaced with each candidate's own link, and{first_name}for personalization (see Message candidates and Reply templates). If you remove the{assignment_link}placeholder, Binary appends an assignment-link line to the message automatically, so a candidate is never sent a message they can't act on. - Exclude candidates who already received this assignment - shown whenever some of your selection has already been sent this exact assignment; leave it checked to skip them, or uncheck to resend. Candidates without an email, or who already submitted this assignment, are always skipped and don't count toward this checkbox.
Click Send to record the send and message everyone eligible in one step. If sending fails for some candidates, you'll see who and why, with a Try again that retries only the ones still outstanding - candidates who were already recorded and messaged successfully are not re-sent.
What the candidate sees
The candidate opens their link, signs in, and sees the assignment's name, description, and questions in the same layout as filling out a form. They can save partial answers and come back, but can only submit once - after that the page shows a confirmation and the questions are replaced with a "thank you" message. A candidate has no way to cancel their own link; it stays open until they submit it or you delete it. If they open a link you've deleted, they see "This assignment is no longer available" instead of the questions.
Review submitted assignments
Open a candidate's profile and go to their Assignments tab - see The candidate detail view. Each assignment they've been sent appears as a card marked either Awaiting submission or Submitted. A submitted card carries the submission date and every answer inline, so there's nothing further to click, though a large file or video attachment may sit behind its own preview.
Hover a card to reveal Delete. Deleting an unanswered assignment stops the candidate's link from working straight away. Deleting a submitted one also removes their answers from the profile, and the confirmation dialog says so before you commit. Either way the assignment drops off the candidate's Assignments tab.
From a candidate's Assignments tab you can also Send assignment, or Create assignment if the form doesn't have one yet. The Responses table carries an Assignments column once a form has any, reading for example "2 of 3 submitted", so you can check status without opening each candidate. Hover a mixed count for the pending and submitted breakdown.
Notes & limits
- Sending an assignment counts against the workspace's normal monthly email quota, the same quota shared by every bulk message - it isn't a separate assignments limit.
- Anyone with access to the form can send, review, and delete its assignments.
- Deleting a candidate's assignment link is manual - Binary doesn't expire a link on its own; it stays open until the candidate submits it or you delete it.
Create an assignment
Build a reusable take-home assignment on a form - a name, an optional description, and a set of questions you can send to any candidate.
