About the role
The job, in one line: design the thumbnail people click on.
A great PGX episode is 90 minutes. A thumbnail has 0.4 seconds. If the thumbnail doesn't pull a click, the conversation might as well not exist. That's how much rides on this work.
You'll design YouTube thumbnails first and foremost. After that, Instagram covers, clip end-cards, and anything else where the goal is to make someone stop scrolling. If it's a layout meant to grab attention, it's yours.
This isn't a brand design role. We're not asking you to make decks, merch, or logos. We want the person who lives and breathes thumbnails. Who can look at a YouTube homepage and tell you in 5 seconds why one channel is winning the click war.
What you'll do
Design 4-8 YouTube thumbnails per episode. Test variants, ship the winner, learn from the result.
Design Instagram covers, reel covers, and clip end-cards.
Sit with the Channel Manager and Editor to figure out what the thumbnail needs to communicate before you design.
Watch CTR data. Notice patterns. Tell us what's working and what isn't.
Iterate fast. A thumbnail that performs gets kept. One that doesn't gets replaced.
What we're looking for
You've made thumbnails before. Real ones, for real channels. We'll want to see them.
You understand thumbnails as a craft. Faces, contrast, hierarchy, negative space, expression, story-in-an-image. You can talk about this.
You watch a lot of YouTube and you know which thumbnails are winning right now and which are dead.
You're fast. A great thumbnail in 2 hours beats a perfect one in 2 days.
You take feedback without flinching. Half the brief comes from data after the upload, not before.
1 to 3 years designing thumbnails or social-first visuals. The portfolio matters more than the resume.
